How to Get Your OpenRouter API Key
AIWU now supports OpenRouter API, giving you unified access to over 200 AI models through a single API key and billing account.
What is OpenRouter?
OpenRouter is a unified gateway that provides access to AI models from multiple providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and dozens of others. Instead of managing separate API keys and accounts for each provider, you get one key that works with all of them.
Why Use OpenRouter with AIWU?
Simplified Management: One API key instead of juggling multiple keys from different providers.
Cost Efficiency: Pay-as-you-go pricing with competitive rates. Compare models and choose the best price-to-performance ratio for your needs.
Model Flexibility: Switch between models instantly without changing your setup. Try Claude 3.5 Sonnet, GPT-4, Gemini Pro, or open-source models like Llama 3 – all through the same integration.
Reliability: If one provider has downtime, easily fallback to another model without reconfiguring AIWU.
Access to Latest Models: Get immediate access to new models as they’re released, without waiting for AIWU updates.
Getting Started with OpenRouter
Step 1: Create Your Account
Visit openrouter.ai and sign up for a free account. You’ll need to verify your email address to proceed.
Step 2: Generate Your API Key
Once logged in:
- Navigate to Settings in the top menu
- Click on Keys in the sidebar
- Click the Create Key button
- (Optional) Give your key a descriptive name like “AIWU WordPress”
- Copy your API key immediately – you won’t be able to see it again
Important: Store your API key securely. Treat it like a password – never share it publicly or commit it to version control.
Step 3: Add Credits to Your Account
OpenRouter uses a prepaid credit system:
- Go to Settings → Credits
- Click Add Credits
- Choose your amount (minimum $5 recommended to start)
- Complete payment through your preferred method
Your credits will be used based on the models you choose and how much you use them. Different models have different pricing – premium models like GPT-4 cost more per token than open-source alternatives.
Step 4: Connect OpenRouter to AIWU
Now you’re ready to use OpenRouter with AIWU:
- Open your WordPress admin panel
- Go to AIWU Settings → API Keys
- Find the OpenRouter section
- Paste your API key
- Save your settings
That’s it! You can now select any OpenRouter model in AIWU’s chatbot, workflow builder, or content generation tools.
Monitoring Your Usage
Keep track of your spending:
- Check your Credits page to see remaining balance
- View detailed usage statistics by model
- Set up spending alerts to avoid surprises
- OpenRouter shows cost estimates before you run requests
Troubleshooting
“Insufficient credits” error: Add more credits to your OpenRouter account.
“Invalid API key” error: Double-check you copied the entire key and saved it correctly in AIWU settings.
Model not working: Some models require minimum credit balance or have specific requirements. Check the model details on OpenRouter.
Rate limits: Free tier has rate limits. Upgrade your account or spread requests over time.
