Set Up Your First AI Chatbot in 5 Minutes

In 5 minutes you’ll have a working AI chatbot on your website — greeting visitors and answering their questions automatically, 24/7. No coding needed.

Before You Start

You’ll need:

Step 1: Open the Chatbot Builder

Go to WordPress Admin → AI Copilot → AI ChatBots.

Click the Create New Chatbot button at the top of the page.

What you should see: The chatbot settings page opens, with the General tab active.

Step 2: Name Your Chatbot and Turn It On

In the General tab:

  1. Enter a name for your chatbot (internal use only — visitors won’t see this)
  2. Find the Active toggle and switch it on

What you should see: The Active toggle turns green.

⚠️ Don’t skip this step. Chatbots are inactive by default. If you forget to turn it on, nothing will show on your site.

Step 3: Connect Your AI Provider

Go to the API tab.

  1. Select your AI provider from the Provider dropdown
  2. Paste your API key into the API Key field
  3. Leave the model on the default setting (you can change it later)

What you should see: The provider name and key are saved when you click Save Changes at the bottom.

💡 Tip: Don’t have a key yet? OpenRouter is the fastest to set up — one key gives you access to all major AI models. Claude gives the best conversation quality.

Step 4: Write Instructions for Your Chatbot

Go to the Context tab. In the Instructions (or System Prompt) field, tell your chatbot who it is and what it should do.

A simple starting template:

You are a helpful assistant for [Your Business Name]. Answer questions about our services, pricing, and availability. Be friendly, concise, and professional. If you don't know the answer, say "I'll connect you with our team" and ask for their email.

What you should see: Your instructions saved in the text field.

💡 Tip: The more specific you are, the better the chatbot performs. “Answer questions about our dental cleaning service priced at $120” is much more useful than “Be helpful.”

Step 5: Save and Publish

Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

What you should see: A green confirmation banner at the top. Your chatbot is now live on your site.

Verify It Works

Open your website in an incognito browser window (Ctrl+Shift+N).

  1. Look for the chat icon in the bottom-right corner of your page
  2. Click it to open the chat window
  3. Type “Hello” and press Enter
  4. You should see an AI response within 3–5 seconds
✅ Got a response? Your chatbot is live. Every visitor to your site can now chat with it.

Common Issues

Problem: “I don’t see a chat icon on my site.”
Fix: Make sure the Active toggle is on (Step 2). Then clear your site cache — caching plugins serve old pages without the chatbot. Test in incognito. See Chatbot Not Showing guide for more.

Problem: “The chat opens but the AI doesn’t respond.”
Fix: Go to the API tab and double-check your API key — delete and re-paste it. Make sure you have billing/credits set up with your provider. See AI Not Responding guide.

Problem: “The chatbot answers, but the responses are too generic.”
Fix: Your chatbot is using general AI knowledge. Make the Instructions in Step 4 more specific — or train it with your actual business data. See Train Chatbot with Embeddings.
